Notes from a Great-Grandson of Louis McDuffee
In spite of my names, Giles Carter, I am the great grandson of Louis
P. McDuffee. Louis did not marry my great grandmother who was only 17 when
my grandfather was born (on his birth certificate in Vermont, 5 June 1862,
it lists Louis McDuffee as his father and lists my grandfather, Leslie Lewis
McDuffee, as illegitimate). I am anxious to find out more about these tiles.
Also where is it possible to obtain some of these? My brother, William
Carter, has obtained several of the Jones McDuffee & Stratton plates, and I
have one of these. Also there is a book written about 1910 or a little
earlier on the company. There is a photo of the principal members of the
company, but it does not name each man. Do you know which one is Louis P.
McDuffee? From family resemblance, we have picked out one, but we would like
to confirm this choice. Thanks for any information you may be able to
provide on Louis McDuffee and also on the tiles. [Response from Mark:
Here's a copy of the photo from the book with the signatures
of each member. ]

I am a retired professor of chemistry (Eastern Michigan Univ.) and
have done a fair bit of research on the McDuffees. I located the grave of
Louis P. McDuffee in Kalamazoo, MI. Unfortunately his fine old home was
leveled in the 1950's because it was empty and being vandalized. However, I
have photos of it and information about his daughter, Alice Louise McDuffee.
She did not marry, but her sister married and had three children. I talked
with one of these several years ago. He was an elderly gentleman living in
Florida and evidently in poor health. He told me that he used to use the
calendar tiles for shooting practice! He disliked the rest of his family and
could give me little information about them.
